Columbia has really dropped the ball on documenting what has been an enthralling and inspiring set of shows during the E Street Band's two-year reunion tours
While they have included Bruce's hilarious and electrifying rock and roll fable/band introduction during an extended middle section of 'Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out' (clocking in at over 16 minutes!), they neglected to include the customary rock and roll jams that characterize the second and third hours of Bruce's marathon shows
They have somehow not realized that the greatness of the E Street Band is that they are the greatest garage band in the world
Seeing Bruce is like going to a high school party and seeing a band that can thrill your soul with the spontaneity and grandeur of pure rock and roll
Echoing the democratic idealism of such great Americans as Whitman, Guthrie, Lincoln, and Martin Luther King, Jr., Springsteen envisions a mythic train carrying us all to the promised land: 'This train carries saints and sinners, ' he sings, 'this train carries losers and winners.' 'American Skin' is positively haunting-low moody synth tones set the tone as each of the band members chants 'Forty-one shots, ' slowly and solemnly

Since 1965, when he and his cohorts in The Band (then called The Hawks) conspired with Bob Dylan to 'go electric, ' Rick Danko has been an integral part of the popular music landscape
As lead singer, bassist and acoustic guitar player for The Band, and as a solo artist, his contributions have been substantial
He soon moved to bass, learning his instrument 'one string at a time, ' and, with the help of the Hawks boogie-woogie piano player (and later, pianist for the late 1980s incarnation of The Band) , whose left-hand techniques he memorized and adapted to his bass playing, began developing his trademark percussive but sliding style
Under Ronnie Hawkins tutelage, Rick began a three-year tenure of non-stop gigging and rigorous rehearsals that fellow Band-mate Richard Manuel once likened to 'boot camp.' By the time he was 20, he was a seasoned pro, having spent most of his teenage years 'playing in bars that you were supposed to be 21 to play in.' By the early 60s, Rick and the other Hawks had outgrown the limited roadhouse and honky-tonk circuit and left Hawkins to pursue greener pastures
The Bands collaboration with Dylan, initially greeted with boos and catcalls around the globe, changed the course of popular music by spawning one of the most significant musical hybrids of the rock era, 'Folk Rock.' Ricks penchant for musical hybrids began germinating, literally, in his own backyard in Simcoe, a town heavily populated with displaced Southern tobacco farmers
