My puzzle pieces look nothing like typical jigsaw puzzle pieces; each piece and each puzzle I cut is unique
I try to make the shape of each piece interesting by itself
I use a special 5-ply mahogany plywood, which allows me to cut intricate pieces that will not break if dropped
In each jigsaw puzzle I cut some "figure pieces" -- pieces shaped like animals, people, etc
Often a figure piece will be related to the scene
For example, I might cut a dolphin piece into the ocean part of a sailing scene
Every puzzle comes with my signature piece (shaped like a strong arm -- see top of page), which I sign, number and date on the back, verifying the puzzle as an Armstrong original
After cutting the jigsaw puzzle, I count the pieces, assemble the puzzle, and sand the back to give it smooth texture
I charge about $0.85 (eight-five cents) per piece, far below what most other wooden puzzle cutters charge, and many people consider my skill and artistry to be equal or superior to those of most other cutters

Hexiamonds
George Huttlin explains and illustrates these shapes composed of 6 equilateral
triangles, which in turn tiles different forms.
Hexiamonds are puzzle pieces similar in concept to but they are not based on the standard checkerboard
Puzzle pieces made in this way have only twelve distinct shapes if we allow the pieces to be flipped over
If, however, we don't permit flipping, then we consider the mirror images of asymmetric pieces to be distinct
Note the connection between the symmetry of the pieces and the type of wood used
Note that in the parallelogram one of the green pieces and one of the gray pieces are lighter in color than the others
This group of pieces is symmetric and can be flipped to form an additional solution
Similarly, one of the blue pieces and one of the gray pieces are darker than the others
Furthermore, the group of three pieces between the heavy while lines is symmetric
(I won't reveal the one and only solution.) Hexiamonds along with heptiamonds (7 equilateral triangles per piece) and octiamonds (8 equilateral triangles per piece) along with pentominoes have been adopted as the basis for interesting quilting patterns by Jo and Jos Hindriks who gave me the idea for the 'heart' and 'fat arrow' as well as the shapes mentioned above

Often I craft the necessary pieces out of wood, but other times I make use of whatever is available (local school supply shops love me because I'm always buying tokens, dice, letter tiles, marbles and the like)
It finally sunk in recently that for rectagular pieces that need to be fashioned with high precision, LEGO bricks would be a fine material with which to work
My first 'LEGO puzzle' (I expect there to be many more) is a recreation of the classic Pentominoes Pieces Puzzle
There are twelve such unique pieces (not including reflected images)
With twelve pieces at five squares each, this creates pieces which cover an area of sixty units (12 X 5 = 60)
Thus, one challenge is to try to fit the pieces into a perfect rectangle of given dimensions; say, a 6 x 10 rectangle
I would make the pieces and tray out of LEGO bricks and make each piece a different color
That's thirteen colors total (one for each piece and one for the tray)
For the pieces I ended up using the following colors: Blue, Brown, Dark Gray, Gray, Green, Orange, Red, Sand Green, Tan, Teal, Yellow, and White
