Tips from the Undergraduate laboratory, Electrical Engineering Dept., University
of Pennsylvania.

  • Help on soldering -Use a good soldering iron with fine pencil tip

  • Radio-Shack irons are good and reliable

  • Do not use very abrasive surfaces to clean / polish the soldering iron tip

  • -Please take all precautions while using soldering irons

  • Never leave your iron plugged in and unattended

  • Never set your hot iron down on anything other than an iron stand

  • Replace the cord of your iron if it becomes worn or gets burnt

  • Never cut off a grounding prong on an iron plug to make it fit an ungrounded receptacle

  • - better than a traditional iron? New! "Cold Soldering" - a review of the Coldheat Classic Iron, tested on a commercial electronic kit

  • If you have little or no experience of using a soldering iron, then EPE (Everyday Practical Electronics magazine) recommends that you practice your soldering technique on some fresh surplus components and clean stripboard (protoboard), before experimenting with a proper constructional project

  • Soldering irons Topics in this section include: T he most fundamental skill needed to assemble any electronic project is that of soldering

  • It takes some practice to make the perfect joint, but, like riding a bicycle, once learned is never forgotten! The idea is simple: to join electrical parts together to form an electrical connection, using a molten mixture of lead and tin (solder*) with a soldering iron

  • A large range of soldering irons is available - which one is suitable for you depends on your budget and how serious your interest in electronics is

    7.1.1 Soldering Basics
Advice about soldering, resoldering, and workmanship.

  • Figure 2: Minimal thermal linkage due to insufficient solder between the pad and soldering iron tip

  • It will volatilize very rapidly; thus it is mandatory that flux be melted to flow onto the work surface and not be simply volatilized by the hot iron tip to provide the full benefit of the fluxing action

  • SOLDERING IRONS Soldering irons come in a variety of sizes and shapes

  • A continuously tinned surface must be maintained on the soldering iron tip's working surface to ensure proper heat transfer and to avoid transfer of impurities to the solder connection

  • Before using the soldering iron the tip should be cleaned by wiping it on a wet sponge

  • When not in use the iron should be kept in a holder, with its tip clean and coated with a small amount of solder NOTE Although tip temperature is not the key element in soldering you should always start at the lowest temperature possible

  • A good rule of thumb is to set the soldering iron tip temperature at 260°C (500°F) and increase the temperature as needed to obtain the desired result

  • CONTROLLING HEAT Controlling soldering iron tip temperature is not the key element in soldering

    basics of soldering.

  • Oh yeah-- a bit of patience helps too! We're going to try to cover the whole topic here in enough detail for you to pick up a soldering iron and get to work on a real project

  • Soldering tools : A soldering iron

  • You will need a much heavier iron (100+ Watts) if you are going to work with coax connectors, but don't try to use it on a circuit board! Solder-- it's traditional to start out with a caution that you must use rosin core solder and never acid core solder, but in practice acid core solder is so hard to find that the warning is almost superfluous

  • You will need mains power for your soldering iron, and you will often need to connect things to a good electrical ground (the center screw in the AC outlet will do)

  • Soldering is not difficult, and the basics are easily within your grasp if you have the right soldering iron, the right solder, and a little bit of practice

  • The flux is vaporized by the heat of the iron and the vapors will clean the surfaces of any oxidation (often invisible to the naked eye), allowing the solder to flow freely onto the metal surfaces

  • The purpose of the soldering iron is to transfer heat into the work to be soldered; the solder should melt upon contact with the work

  • It is heated by the soldering iron, and the molten solder flows up the braid by capillary action

  • For larger surfaces, use a 100 watt American Beauty electric soldering iron, and use fine steel wool 000 or 0000, and wipe off the solder when molten

FrontPage magazine.com :: Happy Kwanzaa by Paul Mulshine
An expose on the origin of the holiday, alleged criminal history and mental
    illness of its founder.

  • She testified that a hot soldering iron was placed in Miss Davis' mouth and placed against Miss Davis' face and that one of her own big toes was tightened in a vise

  • So the exact words of the black woman who had a hot soldering iron pressed against her face by the man who founded Kwanzaa are now lost to history

  • This man now presents a picture which can be considered both paranoid and schizophrenic with hallucinations and elusions, inappropriate affect, disorganization, and impaired contact with the environment.' The founder of Kwanzaa paranoid? It seems so

  • When they denied it, allegedly they were beaten with an electrical cord and a hot soldering iron was put in Miss Davis' mouth and against her face

  • The ultimate irony is that now that Karenga is a Marxist, the capitalists have taken over his holiday

  • HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SOLDERING IRON Your soldering iron is the key to good soldering since it supplies the essential ingredient- HEAT

  • If the tip is covered by a dirt (oxide) film, the iron will not be able to transfer its full heat

  • Never use the iron like a brush- soldering is not a paste-spreading operation

  • To get the most heat out of the iron, always press the iron firmly to the connection
